The first Pinewood Derby® was held in 1953 by Cub Scout Pack 280C of Manhattan Beach, California, operated by the North American Aviation Management Club. It was the brainchild of Cubmaster Donald Murphy. The derby, publicized in Boys' Life in October 1954, was an instant and enduring hit. The magazine offered plans for the track and car, which featured "four wheels, four nails, and three blocks of wood."

The rules of the very first race stated: "The Derby is run in heats - two to four cars starting by gravity from a standstill on a track and run down a ramp to a finish line unaided. The track is an inclined ramp with wood strips down the center to guide the cars." The cars still roll that way today.

Pack 681's track is 15 meters and has 3 racing lanes. Your imagination is the limit to your design! Here are a few things to remember:
Use what's in the box. To keep things fair, aftermarket wheels and axles are not permitted.
Don't alter the wheel base! The cars race down a slotted track. The width of the pine block is designed such that the wheels fit over the slot. You can alter any other dimension, but if you alter the wheel base, your car won't ride down our track.
Avoid a skinny or pointed nose. The car may not sit properly on our starting gate
All cars must pass the following inspection to qualify for the race:
Width shall not exceed 2-3/4 inches.
Length shall not exceed 7 inches.
Weight shall not exceed 142 grams.
Axles, wheels, and body shall be from the materials provided in the kit.
Wheel bearings, washers, and bushings are prohibited.
No lubricating oil may be used. On the day of the race we will provide all racers with graphite grease
The car shall not ride on any kind of spring.
The car must be free-wheeling, with no starting devices.
No loose materials of any kind are allowed in the car.

Our new Pack committee has been busy over the summer creating this website to streamline scout registration, event sign-ups and communications. Parent registration is the required first step before you can register your cubs for scouting in the current year. It is also the prerequisite to receiving future Pack communications. If you have not done so, please create an account via Parent Registration before September 1.

    Key dates to note:

    * Online enrollment opens for returning and new scouts. New scouts are also required to submit a paper application to the Pack (bring completed form to September 1 meeting). Click here to download application.

    * First Pack meeting of the year and scout bundle pickup (i.e., uniform, book, and badges). Our Pack Committee and Den Leaders will be on hand to answer any questions you may have and to provide an overview of the new Scout year. We will have a short meeting as a Pack, then we break out into dens.

You should have received details about the upcoming events via email. If you have not, it could be that you are not registered on the website, or we do not have your current contact information. For questions, please email Pack 681.

From hikes along cascading waterfalls to an energy filled Pinewood Derby event, Pack 681 ended the 2012-13 season with a notable trip to the International Scout Center in Kandersteg, Switzerland. There, the Cubs took a hands-on first aid course, navigated using a compass, practied teamwork and cooperation through fun activities, built sustainable camp fires, and much more. The weekend also commemorated the graduation of the Webelos II to the Boy Scouts.

Congratulations to the Webelos II for their commitment and perseverance to achieve the Arrow of Light!

Next year promises to be another amazing scouting year for the Pack. We look forward to welcoming back current as well as new scouts!

Scout registration for returning and new scouts will begin on August 1. In order to register a scout, Parent registration must be completed first and can be done anytime prior to registering a scout.

Please mark your calendar - The first Pack meeting for the 2013-14 season is scheduled for Sunday, September 1 at 10 a.m. The complete calendar of events can be viewed on the right.
